Our Charity

Canal Boat is a community-led initiative that activates underused stretches of London’s canal network to improve health, well-being, and social connection. We work in partnership with schools, youth groups, community organisations, and local residents to deliver performances, workshops, and events that bring people together through shared experiences on the water.

By helping communities overcome barriers created by overlapping authorities and outdated regulations, we aim to make the entire canal network — not just high-profile areas like King’s Cross or Paddington — a vibrant, accessible space for all.

Our Activites

1. Boating for All

An invitation into the floating fringe—where old skills meet new urgency, and the canal becomes a classroom for self-reliance and low-impact living
  • Moorings and Meanings – Discovering a resilient culture on the water
  • Learn to steer, as well as the challenges and rewards of what it would be like to live on your own boat, and the floating society you’d be joining.
  • Boats Without Barriers – Opening access to those historically excluded
  • Living Lightly, Living Afloat – Powering your own life, managing your own waste, shrinking your carbon footprint
  • Lessons for Landlivers – What can we learn about climate and comunity on the towpath that we can take back home?

2. Prescriptions from the Towpath

Where healing begins with movement, connection, and a shared trail
  • Indoor program (on Bibo), featuring all manner of past workshops (ie., music therapy, movement, crafts, etc.)
  • Outdoor programs (Clinics & Conversations)
  • Born to Run (Slow as Fuck)
  • Workshops on meditation, music, movement and crafts

3. The Culture We Carry

  • Floating Forums
  • Canal podcasts
  • Open Mics and Weekly jams

4. Canal as Commons

  • Reclaiming the canal as a civic space—belonging to all, governed by many
  • Pop-up Markets that conclude with citizen engagement sessions.
  • Neighbours, Elders, Youth
  • Projects with Purpose
  • The People’s Policy Lab

5. Step Aboard
