Kensal Green Cemetery, the UK’s first private cemetery, occupies the north side of the canal in North Kensington. It’s one of London’s “Magnificent Seven” cemeteries that draw visitors from around the world. Highgate Cemetery — where Karl Marx and Douglas Adams are buried — may get more attention, but cemetery aficionados (known as “taphophiles” ) will tell you that Kensal Green, with its 250,000 souls, is London’s “Valhalla.” Tours of the grounds cost just 2 pounds, every Sunday with author Henry Vivian-Neale, who writes about the people buried there. You can book a tour, here.
The General Cemetery Company has graciously given us access to a landing that’s a great place to begin a historical walking tour, led by a 19th Century resident come to life…
