Stumperies are a Victorian gardening tradition, artful arrangements of fallen timber that accommodate insects, insectivores, plants… and people. Using a seed grant of £800 from Ballymore Developers, Bards on Boats kickstarted a community-based effort in August to create a stumpery behind the Sainsburys at Ladbroke Grove.  And because it requires neither hard infrastructure nor disturbance to the underlying ground, this “meanwhile” use of the space can continue until a new Superstore goes in 2-3 years from now as part of Kensal Canalside, property development that will see 3500 new flats and restoration of the old coal drops known as Portobello Basin #1.
